A raft trip down the rapids of the Omo River, which feeds into the Nile, begins this 50-minute video trek along the headwaters of the world's longest river. The birthplace of humans, the Omo region is a place where two sticks still make a fire and body jewelry takes precedence over clothing. It's a world where colobus monkeys swing through the trees, hippopotamuses and crocodiles populate the waters, and tsetse flies claim thousands of lives a year. Hominid fossils, hot springs, and hieroglyphics tell the histories of the land and its peoples. Further up the Nile, viewers meet a tribe that survives on camel blood during the dry season and another whose members drink fresh cattle urine and take as their names the description of their favorite cow. In this first installment of the three-part The Giant Nile series, narrator Alan Hill takes a respectful tone in describing tribal life in these remote regions of Kenya and Rwanda, while the camera catches both the mundane rituals of everyday life and the exhilarating spiritual sacraments that give the Nile tribes their hope and identity. --Kimberly Heinrichs
