I used this book in my own secondary school education. I did not care for it then, and now having worked abroad for the UN, my opinion has only intensified. I look back at this series as doing a disservice to every student who thinks he or she is really learning. It is nothing but pictures accompanied by audio-visual gimmicks to entertain children. There is little to no substantive material, even by level 3, which shows more concern with showing politically correct pictures than actually teaching French. The writers think that it's more important to say "I like hamburgers" and to know your way around the comic book museum than actually to meet the locals on their own terms or to engage in meaningful conversation, reading and writing. It reinforces the idea that Americans should approach the world on American terms (e.g., ordering McDonald's at the Eiffel Tower), rather than embracing what new cultures have to offer.
If I had to pick one book to illustrate why Americans can't speak foreign languages, this would be it.
Conversely, for a contemporary textbook brimming with charts and historical anecdotes and substantive information, see the Ecce Romani Latin series, which taught me more about French than the entire Holt series.
