I love books of a historical nature about auto racing. I've been reading them for over 40 years. This book is in my top 3 of all time.
It is practically a textbook of auto racing history in the United States. For example, I never understood the difference between a midget, sprint, and championship car. I never knew much about Ted Horn or Rex Mays or several other drivers profiled. Great stuff.
It is incredible that one man, Chris Economaki, could have seen so much over such a long period of time. I'm glad that he told his story.
As you near the end of the book, you regret that it is ending. It leaves you wanting more. Highly recommended for serious auto racing fans.

Imagine a guy who has a job doing what he loves so much that he would do it for free. Then imagine that guy having done that job since he was 14 years old, and now he is in his 80s.
That man is Chris Economaki. And the passion of a lifetime is in this wonderful book.
Economaki's marvelous "short and sweet" style is on display as he fills the pages with stories, observations and accounts of every significant racing trend, event and personality since the 1930s.
You just can't stop turning the pages as you feel yourself becoming a tiny part of the same knowledge and history that Chris experienced firsthand.
I am a pretty good auto racing historian myself. So I approached the book thinking that there would be at least a few things that Chris would have maybe missed or skimmed over. Nope. Everything on my list was there, plus about a thousand tons more.
This book is like an auto racing compression chamber. You will go in, enjoy your time, and when you come out the passion of the sport will have been force fed into your DNA. And that feels good.

This book rates as a 9.5 out of 10 by very stringent standards and is a must read for every fan of oval track racing in the US.
Chris Economaki is one of the few people ever who was deeply on the inside of oval racing from the 1930's to the present day and is even one of the fewer that can write so eloquently of its history.
His series of stories and antecdotes are well arranged by time and subject matter and result in a book that is hard to put down.
Chris explains how NASCAR has reached its pre-eminent position and brings intersting comparisons to open wheel racing to show why one has prospered so well while the other has relatively languished. The history of the IRL/Cart split will be found intersting to all fans. This part of the book is worth its weight alone.
The rest including anecdotes, the evolution of oval track racing and insights on many of the all time great drivers and promoters is great trimming and worthy reading without the NASCAR, IRL/Cart stories.
