The humor is back in this novel and the romance is complicated enough to feel familiar. This was the third Kallmaker novel I read during my KK marathon weekend and this was the one that made me realize how well crafted all of her books are. The quality never wavers and each character's emotions and lifestyle are painted with rich details.
If you are in a hurry here goes: Angel is in love with Rett. Rett can't forget Cinny. Cinny married after high school but may be ready for a change.
When the three former classmates return for their high-school reunion, nothing turns out as any of them expected. The women in this romance novel are strong, they're mature and they have dealt with what life handed them. They want what they want, but are willing to realize that what they think they want may not always be what they really want. Got that?
After an unhappy childhood with an unloving, slatternly mother, handsome singer Loretta "Rett" Jamison has built a successful career as a lounge singer. At work, her life is filled with romantic ballads and hot jazz. But at home, her failing relationship with lover/manager Trisha York has left her feeling blue. Trisha no longer tries to hide her interest in or resist the charms of younger women. When the dust settles, Rett is alone. Trish has not only depleted her savings and damaged her opportunities for a big contract with Disney, she has devastated Rett's already shaky self esteem.
National Science Award winner Dr. Angelica Martinetta is being honored by the reunion committee for her victories in the war against ovarian cancer. However, Angel is more interested in pursuing a relationship with the woman she has pined for all these years. There was just one kiss, but she can't forget it. (I can relate to that!)
Blond and beautiful, former Head Cheerleader Cinny Keilor is an All-American girl with an all-consuming secret. She might be looking forward to reliving memories of proms and pep rallies but she has not forgotten those steamy nights in the back seat of Rett's's car.
Karin Kallmaker makes falling in love with her characters wonderfully easy. This time she has shown us a realistic portrayal of a sophisticated hard-working nightclub singer as well as a genetic researcher. Her research appears to get not only the facts but also the feelings right, no matter what career a woman has!

The perfect beach book - take this along on vacation

I found this to be a very fun and sexy book - I especially like what strong and independent women Rett and Angel are. I found myself wanting to read more and more about them - I think they are a tremendous couple. Rett especially has my admiration for overcoming a desolate childhood and she continues to strive to find the pieces that will enrich her life. I loved how she powerfully and decisively dealt with Trisha in the beginning of the book. Her scenes with Angel are simply wonderful, passionate and at times laugh out loud funny. The depiction of Rett's adolescent relationship with Cinny was very realistic, very believable.
Especially moving for me is the scene where Rett shares with Angel how she believes Angel views her, now that was unforgettable.
As with all this author's work this novel is rich in detail. You don't get a superfluous career for Rett, the reader learns the songs and the routine that the life of singer entails. The book isn't just about Rett and Angel, you get to know and care for Cinny and the rest of their contemporaries.
Don't miss the two very moving short stories in the author's anthology 'Frosting on the Cake' where you get to see the women a couple years later.
If you liked this novel you also gobble up the author's novels -

Some Memories are Better Forgotten...

Successful singer Rett Jamison is the victim of a horrendous past, with little hope for a bright future. She is invited to her high school reunion and finds herself revisiting many unpleasant memories from that time in her life. Her alcoholic, trampy mother raised a Rett with no self esteem, and has been absent from Rett's life since she moved out after high school. Cinny Keilor took advantage of Rett's feelings of uselessness and sexually teased her behind the bleachers and in the back seat of her car.
About the same time as receiving the invitation, Rett meets Dr. Angelica Martinetta at a local lesbian bar. Angelica kisses Rett passionately and takes her away to a hotel for the night... the behavior not characteristic of either woman.
It's not until Rett shows up in her hometown for the reunion that she realizes her mother no longer controls her life, that Cinny can no longer hurt her, and that Angelica is actually `Angel' - a former outsider and high school nerd who grew up to be a certified brain.
Fairly tame for a Kallmaker book, `Unforgettable' is a solid story with likable characters. Although it follows the standard formula of the genre, the author throws in enough angst from both Rett's past and Angel's past to make it interesting. Not quite a 5 star undertaking, this book is definitely worth reading.
