Someone said it well in the review of a different George book that the "new George" (meaning the latest Curious George books written in the 1990s) just goes through a predictable pattern of naughty behavior, getting chewed out by someone, and through lucky circumstances, everything works out okay. A few of the books make George "clean up" his own mess, such as the Visit to the Chocolate Factory book, where he accidentally turns the candy conveyor belt on "extra fast" but George is able to quickly sort the chocolates into boxes before they hit the floor. (Parents will cringe at the thought of those chocolates touching a monkey's paw while going into the boxes, but you're obviously not supposed to think about it too hard). In this book, George goes on a hike with two other young children, unsupervised by an adult. They are carrying water and supplies, and George is assigned the task of carrying the bag of marshmallows. He ends up ripping the bag by accident, and when they chase after a deer in the woods, they get lost. They want to eat their marshmallows but they've all fallen out of the bag. One of the children yells at George until he cries. (What about forgiveness? The book implies that George deserves this severe repremanding, when this is one of the few times George did not purposely do the thing he's getting railed on for.) Well, you can probably guess... the kids would have been up the creek if it hadn't been for the trail of marshmallows that George dropped that they were able to follow back to the trail and find their way back.

I've been writing a bunch of George reviews today. The new books based on the film series are only so-so. For true George fun, check out "The Adventures of Curious George" VHS (claymation), which is a childhood favorite of mine that I have passed on to my daughter.
